Tell Your Regional Council Agriculture is Vital to Economy and Food Security
New York’s newly formed Regional Councils for Economic Development held their first meetings in August. These councils are intended to coordinate economic development across New York. Each region is competing for up to one billion dollars in economic aid from the state. Each council will write regional economic development plans by November with opportunities for public involvement. We need to get out there and make sure that our Regional Councils understand that the business of agriculture is critically important to both our economy and our food security.
Each council has their own schedule of meetings, public forums and other means of receiving public input. To help supporters of farms and farmland make their voices heard American Farmland Trust is maintaining this resource page. We will provide information about and links to the Councils various avenues for public engagement.
*Please note that many of the public forums require or request advance registration. Registration information is available in the links about public forums provided here.
New York State Websites
There are two state-run websites that provide information on the Regional Councils. All available information is not always posted on each website so it is best to check both.
New York State Open For Business: Regional Councils on Economic Development provides detailed information about the individual region’s economies and how the Regional Councils for Economic Development system works as well as updates on individual council activities.
The New York State’s Empire State Development Council website provides information about the Empire State Development agency. The newsroom section of the website offers links to press releases featuring current information about the Regional Councils’ meeting schedules and other activities.
